My Nintendo Switch thoughts

2017-01-16

January 12th 2017 at 11pm eastern standard time was an exciting time for Nintendo fans everywhere, finally after much anticipation Nintendo has finally unveiled their new console “The Nintendo Switch”. It will be releasing this March 3rd, 2017 globally for a retail price of $299.99 along with two different colors, Neon Blue & Red and Gray with black and both will retail for the same price. Sadly no pack in titles will be included with the system. So be prepared to find the games you would like to have if you plan to purchase on yourselves. I will give my thoughts from the madhouse weekend from games, option of play, and everything in between. Slight overview of what happened during that weekend.

So to start off lets talk about how can you play the game, well there is quite a few ways to play actually. For starters you have the standard play, your TV. Go ahead and dock your Switch console to the included dock and use the included Joy-Con Left & Right controllers into the grip. Next Handheld mode take your joy-con controllers and attach to your Switch and remove it from the dock and take wherever you go. It can last up to 2.5 to 6.5 hours of play depending on the game you are playing. For Example The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild can give you up to 3 hours of play. Tabletop mode use your Switch and use the joy-con controllers for two-player play, while using the Switch screen or you can still use your TV if it is docked. Those are just some of the different ways to play the Nintendo Switch. Now from what I learned the Joy-Con controllers can last up to 20 hours which isn’t to bad. Each controller is also different, for example Joy-Con features and HD Rumble to can mimic how many ice cubes in single glass cup, along with that comes with a share button to capture screenshots and even video in a later update for the Switch console. Joy-Con Right comes with an advanced IR senor that can detect shape and distant from where another player is standing or object as an example, also a NFC reader for reading amiibo data as well. Most importantly both controllers will have a L&R buttons for games that will need them, D-pad buttons will feature on the left and A/B/X/Y buttons on the right. Nintendo has also confirmed that you can purchase additional Joy-Con controllers for $49.99 for either left or right, you can buy the bundle of two for $79.99 a little too much if you ask me, but, something to consider if you would like spares. A new Pro controller was also announced for super traditional gaming style of play which itself will retail $69.99. This is really a lot for a controller if you ask me outside of the XboxOne Elite controller that is crazy expensive. Then again colored PS4 controllers are also $64.99 so not too bad I suppose.

Nintendo is having a plan for Online play, their plan is this that they will have online chatting in parties (FINALLY), set-up “Play appointments” with friends, no longer you will need friend codes to link up with friends. Also lastly starting from launch of the system till the Fall 2017 it will be a paid service. That information will be coming at a later time, this is all we know for now. Now I am a little worried about this, but, I am still looking forward to it. I hope that it can be something affordable, and easy and something competitive.

Games games and more games, now Nintendo announced some new IPs (Intellectual Properties) for the Nintendo Switch and one of them is something we didn’t hear about called Super Mario Odyssey. This is going to be launching this 2017 holiday season check out the trailer below to see what new adventure will be embarking on. Also this will be a open-world sandbox Mario game since Super Mario Sunshine back on the GameCube.

But, wait there’s more, summer of 2015 biggest hit and winner of the Video Game Awards best Shooter, Splatoon 2 was also announced for the Switch for this summer as well. With new locations to continue the never-ending Turf War, new weapons are coming including the Splat Duolies for faster shooting and dodging moves. Check out the trailer  below to watch the madness.

The Switch will have two new games also coming called “ARMS” which is a brand new action fighting game where you hold the Joy-Con controllers upright and punch towards the TV (don’t worry it’s not motion controlled). If you tilt the controllers slight left or right it will curve the punches towards your opponents or NPC if you are playing alone. “1,2 Switch” is also the new IP coming to the Switch to take advantage of the new way to play against others. Rather than facing the screen, you will actually face one another for more of the fun and one on one feel. Check out both trailers below.

To close their few announcements and other trailers they showed a brand new trailer for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild which it too finally got a release date which launch alongside of the Nintendo Switch March 3rd. For the Wii U version, I think it is also safe to say that it will come March 3rd as well. Check out the new trailer, also this is probably the most emotional Zelda game that will come out, I cannot wait.

Some other titles that are coming to the Switch from launch to Fall/Holiday Seasons are:

  • Super Bomberman R – Launch Title
  • Just Dance 2017 – Launch Title
  • 1,2 Switch – Launch Title
  • Snipperclips (Spring 2017)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (April 28th 2017)
  • The Elders Scroll V: Skyrim (Fall 2017)
  • Super Street Fighter II Ultra (2017)
  • Minecraft (2017)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles (2017)
  • FIFA (2017)

Those are just some examples of the games coming to the Switch. Also I might add during the presentation Nintendo has 50 third-party developers, developing 80 titles for the Switch as well. Looking forward to E3 this year to find out what those developers are bringing to the Switch. This to me is good for Nintendo, but, my only concern how much more will they stay committed in bringing the software? We will see this year at E3 2017.

So that is it basically I know it is a lot but, that is all the key information about the Nintendo Switch. System specs will feature a 6.2 Captive touchscreen, 32GB internal system storage with expandable storage of up to 2TB via micro SD card. I don’t know too much on the power but, from what I read from various online sites, more so close to the Tegra K1 processor that was on the Shield TV and Tablet from Nvidia. Also, if you were a huge fan of Hyrule Warriors, we are in luck, Tecmo Koei announced “Fire Emblem Warriors” will be coming. A Nintendo Direct for it will happen this Januray 18th, so stay tuned for that. All in all, I am IN on this system, I love the concept of home console play on the go and I look forward to quick local multiplayer connection while on the go as well.

What about you? Are you looking forward to the Nintendo Switch? Will buy on launch? Wait a little later? Let me know down in the comments below. Thanks for reading, leave a like and comment if you like. Happy gaming and remember be kind.
